Live Bait Crabs

Live Crabs: Irresistible Bait for Inshore & Nearshore Angling

Capitalize on one of nature's most effective baits with our selection of live crabs. From the prized softshell blue crab to feisty fiddlers and hardy green crabs, these crustaceans are a natural magnet for a wide array of game fish, triggering aggressive feeding responses.

Natural Prey Appeal

Crabs are a staple food source for many coastal predators. Presenting a live crab offers a scent, movement, and texture that fish are programmed to devour.

Target Diverse Species

Effective for Tarpon, Permit, Cobia, Redfish, Sheepshead, Tautog (Blackfish), Striped Bass, Pompano, Black Drum, and more, depending on the crab type.

Versatile Rigging

Live crabs can be fished whole, halved, or with shells cracked, on various rigs to match conditions and target species, providing a dynamic presentation.

The Angler's Edge: Understanding Live Crabs as Bait

Why Live Crabs Reign Supreme

Live crabs are more than just bait; they're a natural part of the aquatic ecosystem that game fish actively hunt. Their subtle movements, even when hooked, combined with the scent they release, make them incredibly effective. Softshell and peeler crabs are particularly potent as they signal an easy, vulnerable meal. The crunch of a hard crab also triggers an aggressive response from certain species.

Key Types of Crabs for Bait & Their Targets:

  • Blue Crabs (Peelers & Softshells): The holy grail for many anglers. "Peelers" are crabs about to shed their hard shell, and "softshells" are those that have just molted. Both are irresistible to Tarpon, Permit, Cobia, Redfish, and large Striped Bass.
  • Fiddler Crabs: Small, active crabs easily identified by the male's large claw. Excellent for Sheepshead, Tautog, Pompano, Spadefish, and Black Drum, especially around structure like pilings and jetties.
  • Green Crabs: A common and hardy inshore bait, particularly effective in cooler waters for Tautog, Sheepshead, and Striped Bass.
  • Pass Crabs (e.g., "Dollar Crabs", small swimming crabs): Crucial bait during their seasonal "runs" or "flushes," especially for Tarpon and Permit in southern waters. Their availability is often tied to tides and moon phases.
  • Mole Crabs (Sand Fleas): Small crustaceans found in the surf zone. Prime bait for Pompano, Redfish, Sheepshead, Whiting, and surf-feeding Striped Bass.

Availability of specific crab types can be regional and highly seasonal.

Our Commitment to Quality Bait Crabs

We understand that high-quality bait translates to better fishing success. Our live crabs are sourced and handled to ensure they are healthy, active, and in prime condition for bait use. For delicate baits like peelers and softshells, careful handling is paramount.

Keeping Your Live Bait Crabs Healthy

  • General Care: Most crabs need a cool, moist, and well-ventilated environment. Avoid direct sunlight and heat. Do NOT submerge them in fresh water.
  • Blue Crabs (Peelers/Softshells): Keep cool and damp. A cooler with a damp towel or seaweed works well. Separate softshells to prevent them from damaging each other. Use quickly.
  • Fiddler & Green Crabs: Can be kept in a bucket or container with a damp substrate like seaweed, burlap, or a bit of sand from their natural environment. Ensure ventilation.
  • Pass Crabs: Best kept in a well-aerated livewell or bucket with clean saltwater from their collection area if holding for an extended period.
  • Mole Crabs: Keep in a container with cool, damp sand.

Mastering Crab Rigging Techniques

  1. Blue Crabs (Softshell/Peeler):
    • Hook through a point of the carapace (shell) on either side, avoiding the central organs, or through a leg socket. For peelers, you might remove the top shell.
    • Can be fished whole or halved/quartered for smaller species or to stretch bait. Bait elastic can help secure them.
  2. Fiddler Crabs:
    • Hook through the back of the carapace, from bottom to top, or through one of the rear leg sockets.
    • Often, multiple fiddlers are threaded onto a single hook for Sheepshead.
  3. Green Crabs:
    • Hook through a point of the carapace (side "horn") or a rear leg socket. Some anglers crack the shell slightly to release more scent.
    • Removing the claws can sometimes be beneficial depending on the target.
  4. Pass Crabs & Mole Crabs:
    • Hook carefully through the edge of the carapace or, for mole crabs, through the "digger" (tail). The goal is to allow natural movement without killing the crab quickly.
    • Use a fine-wire hook for smaller crabs to minimize damage.

Use appropriately sized J-hooks or circle hooks. For bottom fishing, a fish-finder rig or Carolina rig works well. For drifting or casting, a simple leader with minimal weight or free-lining can be effective.

Handling Tips for Bait Crabs

Always be mindful of crab pinchers! Blue crabs, in particular, can deliver a painful pinch. Handle them from the rear of their carapace, grasping them by the base of their swimming legs if possible. Fiddler crabs have one large claw (on males) to watch for, while green crabs are generally feisty.
